What does Dr. Michelle do every morning?
Posted on 2012-01-12 08:01:23
Happy Reading Everyone!
This morning I was just going through the motions of my morning routine. I noticed the new tube of toothpaste, has flouride in it (it must have been on sale). I'm not here to debate the safety of flouride (even though it is a waste product of aluminum, a known neurotoxin, and linked to Alzheimer's). Then I looked at my Listerine, and remembered an e-mail someone sent me about using mouth wash to kill mosquitos, if it can kill a mosquito should I really be putting it in my mouth? Then I started paying attention to everything else I was using, same as every morning: Shampoo, conditioner, face wash, soap, deodorant, toner, lotion, eye make-up, foundation, lipstick, and hair product. Then I brushed my dyed hair, filed my polished nails, and changed into my scrubs that were washed in detergent and fabric softener.
Holy Chemicals Batman!
There are chemicals in everything that I put on my skin, hair, and nails, which are porous by the way. Now all of these products have been deemed 'safe'. A lot of these products have been tested on animals and showed no harmful effects.
Here is my issue: All of those products are tested individually, and over what time period? Maybe in a month or a year no animals would die, develop a tumor, or get sick, but I have been regularly doing the above routine since I was roughly 18 years old. Now let's assume I continue doing that routine until I am 60, then what are the affects? What if you add in all the chemicals that are in the the surfaces I touch, food that I eat, air that I breathe, and water that I drink and swim in? Thank God I don't take any drugs... wait a minute, when I was a child I was given vaccines, antibiotics, and over the counter drugs. Don't forget the chemicals from the nylons I've worn, diapers, diaper cream, water bottles I've drank from, microwaved plastic I've eaten out of, times that I didn't roll down the car widows before turning on the heat.
To my knowledge, the effects of this type of behavior over 40 years hasn't been studied, but what I do know is that humans are the sickest species on the planet. Diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, lymphoma, melanoma, and auto-immune diseases are all on the rise. There are over 80,000 chemicals found in consumer products. A lot of these chemicals are proven to cause health problems at some level of potency.
Now, I try to be realistic about things. There is no way that you will ever to be able to avoid all chemicals and pollutants. Even brand new babies are born with over 100 banned chemicals in their blood.
The way I see it, here are your choices:
1) Pretend you were never given this information and continue living the way you are living.
2) Be depressed by this information assuming that there is nothing that you can do about it and realize that we are all going to die, a most likely slow, chemically induced death.
3) Be aware of the issue. Realize what's at stake (the health of you and your loved ones). Do the very best that you can to minimize or eliminate the chemical exposure that you can.
I debated options 1 and 2, but decided to go with number 3. I did some research, I found this website, Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. It rates product safety based on the ingredients. I also decided that I don't need to dye my hair, I can limit painting my nails to special occasions, and I can easily exchange some of the products I use for healthier options like castile soap, mineral make-up, and green cleaners.
Some of you might say, but healthier options are so expensive! Last week my grandmother and I were speaking to a nutritionalist who recommended switching to organic free range eggs, to which my grandmother later asked, "Who can afford $4 for a dozen eggs?" I replied, "Healthy people who don't spend money on doctor's visits and prescriptions." Her one word answer, "True."
The truth is the truth. All that stuff is bad for us. We have to CHOOSE for ourselves what we are capable and willing to change, because in the end, who wants to ask themselves, "What if?"

P.S. I considered myself 'low-maintenance' until I had to write out my morning routine. Here's to knowing the difference between a want and a need.
I have a friend with cancer. Do you?
Posted on 2011-05-09 07:18:40
Unfortunately,
we have all had a loved one that was diagnosed with cancer and had to fight for
their life. I came across this article,
a conversation between Dr. Mercola and Dr. Gonzalez. They were speaking about the importance of
eating the right foods, detoxifying the body, and alternative treatments to
cancer. Dr. Gonzalez has a private practice
that treats cancer patients with nutrition.
Their
conversation went on for 37 pages. It
gives me hope for my friend that there are things she can take control of when
it comes to her treatment. It also
reinforces how critical chiropractic care can be for someone fighting with
their life (and all of us for that matter.)
This is what
Dr. Gonzalez had to say about chiropractic: “Majority of cancer patients have some prior history of significant neurological trauma, like whiplash. If we
find that to be the case, structural therapy can be extremely helpful…But you
know in conventional medicine, they don’t mention structure. It’s all orthopedics, you know, just
repairing broken bones and all.
You know,
the nervous system is housed within a bone structure, and if that bone
structure isn’t in normal alignment, it can cause stress to the nervous
system. The nervous system does control everything, and if it isn’t happy,
your body is not going to work well no matter what nutrition you take. So very often with patients that have had a
history of neurological trauma, there are certain types of chiropractic that I
think are really effective. It can be very helpful, and the patients
stabilize when they get proper body work. They improve substantially.
So making
sure your structure is in good working condition is important, because your spine
and skull house the nervous system, which controls everything from the top of
your skull to the bottom of your toenails. If your nervous system isn’t
happy, no matter what you do nutritionally, you’re never going to function
well… I learned that it’s really important and can make miraculous changes.”
Dr. Mercola
added that he gets weekly chiropractic assessments, even though he does not
have neck or back pain.
The
unfortunate truth is that we all have cancerous cells in our body. Science has shown that proper nutrition and
chiropractic adjustments can reduce those cells. I am going to do anything I can to reduce
those cells.
This article
has really inspired me to take a better look at what I am putting in my
body. Could I be doing better? Can I eat cleaner foods? The answer is yes I can, and yes I will. It also reinforces the importance of regular
chiropractic adjustments. Please share
this with a loved one, it could make a difference. For the whole article go to mercola.fileburst.com
Last week I went to the BEST DOCTOR EVER!
Posted on 2011-04-25 07:02:38
Last week, I was so sick I had to cancel all of my appointments on Thursday (I'm sorry if you were one of them.) I knew that I really needed something to help me fight off whatever was causing the infection.
I felt awful; runny nose, small fever, bad cough, headache from coughing. My grandmother insisted I "take something." She suggested Robitussin DM (the expiration date on the bottle said 1991.) I threw the bottle out, but not because it was expired. The drugs in the bottle were meant to suppress my cough, stop my nose from running, and stop my fever. I asked my grandmother how that was going to help me kill the virus. She said, "well it might make you feel better." This is true, temporarily. However, my fever is present to kill the virus. My cough and runny nose are there to expel it from my body. Medication would only constipate me with the invaders and prolong my illness.
I felt so cruddy, I knew I needed something! So I thought what is the best thing I can do for myself right now? Take vitamins? Take Echinacea? Up my vitamin C and Zinc? Drink tea? Have some homemade chicken soup? Then it hit me! The best antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal that I know of, and I ALWAYS CARRY IT ON ME! I couldn't believe I didn't think of it sooner.
What was it? It was my body. I was born with the capability and power to fight off this infection. I've always had the ability, and I always will as long as I continue to take care of my body. I have neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes, dendritic cells, and macrophages. These white blood cells will do more for your body than any doctor or drug ever will.
I made sure I took my daily multivitamin and probiotic. I also got lots of rest and took some other immune boosting vitamins and herbs. I also got 2 EXTRA ADJUSTMENTS to help increase my immune system (it also helped with some of the aches and pains from coughing.)
So, when you get "sick" the best thing you can do is boost your immune system. Even better, take care of your body all the time, so when you do get an invader, you are capable of killing it quickly. Having those symptoms aren't a sign of sickness, they are a sign that your body is strong enough to fight an infection. They are a good thing!
That is why the best doctor you will ever know is your own body. It needs no help, just no interference.
And you will all be happy to know, that I am much better, and the office is open!

Fish Oil
Posted on 2010-10-28 12:20:00
Lately, it seems that Fish Oil has become a hot topic. Recently, I’ve had a lot of patients as well as many friends and family members ask the benefits of Fish Oil.
Let’s start by explaining what Omega-3 Fatty Acids are. These are the good guys, good fatty acids that you want in your diet. They are naturally found in cold-water fish, shellfish, grass-fed beef, plants, walnuts, pecans, and flaxseed to name a few. The long chain omega-3 fatty acids that come from fish and algae (also called EPA and DHA) are the most beneficial. There are many studies out there suggesting that omega -3’s may provide some benefits to a variety of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis, among others.
Here are some suspected benefits:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Good for the heart/arteries
- May decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease
- May reduce risk of Alzheimer’s
- May improve immune function
Now let’s explain Omega-6 Fatty Acids, the bad guys. Most of us have way too many of these in our diet. They are unsaturated fatty acids that can be found in poultry, eggs, avocado, grains/cereals, soybean oil, vegetable oil, etc.
Here are some suspected risks:
- Cause inflammation
- Poor heart/artery health
- May increase probability of depression
- May increase possibility of obesity
- May increase possibility of cancer
The optimal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid is thought to be 4 to 1 or even lower. This is a major problem when the typical American diet contains a ratio of 10 to 1 or even close to 30 to 1! To counter the effect of having too much omega-6 fatty acids (the bad guys) in your diet, your doctor may recommend that you eat more fish or take a fish oil supplement. A flaxseed oil would have the same effect if you couldn't take a fish oil supplement, for example, a vegetarian could take flaxseed.
